Other Psychodynamic Approaches
Until very recently, long-term psychodynamic therapy was considered the most effective treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Partially due to the intense attachment needs associated with this condition, psychodynamic approaches and their reliance on transference in the therapy room provide such clients with the means to repair some of these disorganized attachment bonds.
There are a myriad of treatment options available. In general, they have been shown to reduce impulsivity and self-harming behaviors. They also tend to lower the overall amount of anger that clients with BPD report. Unlike many psychodynamic approaches, the treatment of BPD tends to focus on the present rather than on the past.
