Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT)
Mentalization-Based Therapy is rooted in attachment theory and is considered a psychodynamic approach. It was designed specifically for use with clients dealing with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
The treatment involves a therapist guiding the client towards a greater understanding of their own mental state, as well as the mental state of others in their lives. It is also related to Cognitive-Behavioral approaches in that it addresses the faulty thinking that individuals dealing with BPD may experiences. Such faulty thing is theorized to be the root of fears of abandonment, characteristic impulsivity, as well as suicidal or self-harming tendencies. The process involves both individual work as well as a commitment to a group therapy approach and has shown to be effective in treatment and to achieve gains that are present five years after therapy has ended. |
