Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed under the supervision of Marsha Linehan. Research into DBT has shown it to be effective in treating individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as well as decreasing self-harming and suicidal behaviors.
In its manualized form, DBT is generally carried out over a 12-month period and involves a therapist who shows a great deal of empathy and acceptance, while also challenging the client, helping them to improve their coping techniques. Some recent research provides evidence that DBT may also be effective using a 6-month treatment approach (Seligman & Reichenberg, 2014). DBT treatment goals can be grouped into four stages:
