Childhood Abuse & Parenting Factors
Those who are diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have a high rate of experiencing significant abuse at the hands of their parents or caregivers. These abuses range from neglect and brutality through incest and other debilitating traumas. In fact, according to Kring and Johnson (2014), it is believed that abuse rates are higher for BPD than almost any other disorder (i.e., Dissociative Identity Disorder [DID] may be the one major exception).
It has been been speculated that both BPD and DID may be closely related since there is a high frequency of dissociation observed in clients with BPD.
